Salesforce Launches a Cloud Pilot Program for Brands to Mint and Sell NFTs
Salesforce, the cloud computing giant, steps into the NFT arena with the launch of NFT Cloud, a platform that allows brands and enterprises to mint and sell NFT assets.
NFT Cloud is marketed as an easy-to-use technology in the worlds of NFTs and the emerging metaverse, allowing businesses to leverage Salesforce's cloud-based tools to produce and sell NFTs, engage online communities, and extract data from their offers.
According to Adam Caplan, Salesforce's senior vice president of emerging technology, the new platform, which is now in a pilot program, will be broadly accessible by October, adding that brands are more likely to employ NFTs for those latter purposes—engagement and access—rather than selling collectibles with no functional use.
Salesforce NFT Cloud is now a limited-access trial platform and is expected to be available to all users in October. The initiative's website does not clarify which blockchain platform would be used to mint NFTs, but none that employs an energy-intensive proof-of-work consensus model will be supported. (Hundreds of employees criticized the proposal at first, citing environmental concerns.)
As a result, Ethereum, the most popular platform for NFT collectibles, can be considered off the table and won't be used for this matter. However, it is important to mention that Ethereum is shifting to a more energy-efficient proof-of-stake model, but there is no precise timeline for when this will take place.
Scaling solutions like Polygon and Immutable X reduce Ethereum's environmental impact, but it's unclear whether Salesforce plans to use any NFT platform that eventually connects with Ethereum's mainnet.
