World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to Launch "Moonsault” NFT Marketplace
WWE Chief Branding Officer Stephanie McMahon announced, at the South by Southwest festival, the upcoming launch of "Moonsault," an NFT marketplace that will only sell WWE NFTs.
WWE Twitter account followed suit on Monday, directing fans to the Moonsault website. The site's public face is currently just a landing page with the words (in all caps), “The official marketplace for WWE NFTs. Dropping soon. Enter your email to stay up to date.” Users can then submit their email addresses to receive updates from the platform, the WWE, and the WWE's partner Blockchain Creative Labs.
The news is not entirely unexpected. In October 2021, the WWE agreed to a deal with Fox Corp.'s Blockchain Creative Labs. Newspapers reported at the time that the marketplace would house NFTs of famous wrestlers, iconic moments, and live events such as Wrestlemania. The platform will be built on the Eluvio blockchain, in which Fox has invested.
McMahon was open with investors about WWE's plans to explore the metaverse during a December 2021 earnings call. She stated that the WWE is a "community-based" organization. Because more people will use the metaverse to connect and socialize in the future, there will be "huge opportunities" for the WWE to expand its business there.
"We are absolutely exploring the Metaverse as an opportunity for WWE, especially as the theory unfolds that that's really where more and more people are going to go to connect and socialize,” said Stephanie McMahon.
